Precision Farming: Introducing Manure Nitrogen Sensors

7. April 2022

If your farming operation relies on liquid manure, the Precision Farming Free DLC for Farming Simulator 22 will make your fertilization processes more efficient. Thanks to manure nitrogen sensors. Find our more below!

The Precision Farming Free DLC is a project initiated by John Deere and funded by EIT Food, Europe’s leading Food Innovation Initiative. Co-funded by the EU, it is meant to highlight sustainable technology in agriculture. It releases on April 19th for PC and consoles.

Managing Heterogeneous Manure

As liquid manure is never homogeneous, measuring its nutrient content as it is applied to the soil is an important new technology towards more sustainable and precise fertilization.

With Precision Farming activated in Farming Simulator 22, the concentration of nitrogen in manure will always vary. That also means, the applied amount of nitrogen can differ from the expected application rate quite heavily - up to 40%.

Using A Manure Sensing System

To compensate for this constant fluctuation, each slurry tanker in the game now has the option to install the manure sensing system by John Deere. This near-infrared sensor measures the current nitrogen content of the manure.

With that information, the application rate will be dynamically adjusted as the machine travels across the field, so that you can apply the precise amount of nutrients your crops require.

You can add the manure sensing system on the configuration screen at the dealership when shopping for a new manure tanker. Also introduced with the Precision Farming Free DLC is the garant PTR 30.000.

Goals and Members of the Collaboration

The EIT Food funded project aims to provide knowledge regarding sustainable farming technology. Implementing Precision Farming in the global video game phenomenon Farming Simulator is one of EITs multiple steps to increase awareness.

Various other partners from the European Union are part of the project: The University of Hohenheim (Germany), the University of Reading (UK), Grupo AN (the largest cereal cooperative in Spain) and the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of Polish Academy of Sciences cooperate to promote the technology.

Downloaded more than one million times, the first version of the Precision Farming DLC for Farming Simulator 19 proved a great success.
