[Crops 101] How To Sow & Harvest Wheat

In this tutorial, we focus on Wheat. What do you need? How do you plant it? We answer all your questions!

What Is Special About Wheat?

• Wheat is one of the easiest crops to start with
• You can feed wheat to your pigs and chicken
• While harvesting wheat, you can also produce straw
• Straw can be used for TMR and barns to produce manure
• You can use your harvester for other types of grain
• Wheat is planted from September until October
• It’s harvested during July and August 

What You Need For Wheat

If you already have the necessary machinery, you can skip this part. A lot of the equipment you need for wheat, is needed at the beginning anyway and can be used for other crops as well. 

• You need a tractor with a front loader attachment, to attach various tools.
• You need a bale spike and a pallet fork to transport resources. 
• You need a cultivator to prepare the field for your crops. 
• You need a seeder and seeds. In the ‘seeding’ category of the shop, you find seeders and seeds. 
• You need a fertilizer spreader, fertilizer, and lime to increase the yield. For beginners, artificial fertilizers are the best choice. Keep in mind: not all spreaders can spread lime! 
• You need a weeder to get rid of the weeds that will soon pop up. Otherwise, the yield will be reduced. 
• You need a harvester with a grain header to harvest your crops. 
• You need a trailer to transport and sell the harvested wheat. 
• You need another trailer to transport the header of your cultivator. There are special trailers to use for.

You can sow wheat from the start of September until the end of October. The plant is ready to harvest during July and August. 

How To Operate The Machinery

Operating the machinery on the different working steps is quite similar. So to begin with, we show you how to handle your machinery:

1. Align your tractor with the designated tool. Drive slowly to the coupling and press the designated button to connect.
2. If necessary, fill your machine with the required resource (seeds, fertilizer). Just place the implement next to the resource and press the button for refilling.
3. Drive to your field and use the machine. Unfold the machine, lower it (if necessary) and you are good to go!

Step By Step: How To Plant Wheat

Just follow this step by step and you are good to go:

1. Applying lime: Use your fertilizer spreader and cover your field in lime
   
   
2. Cultivate your field: Switch to your cultivator and work your field
   
   
   
3. Sow the wheat: Fill your seeder and seed away
   
   
   
4. Fertilizing: Apply it on your field. If you want to get a fertilization rate of 100 %, you need to apply fertilizer on your field after another stage of growth of your plants.
   
   
   
5. Weeding: You will find weed between your crops. You should get rid of it as soon as they pop up. The longer they grow, the harder they are to terminate. In the first stage, you can still use the weeder to remove weeds. After that, you need a hoe or field sprayer.
   
   
   
6. Harvesting wheat: When it’s time, get your harvester. As streets are often narrow and crowded, we recommend transporting the header on a trailer. If you want to collect straw afterward, you need to activate the straw swath before harvesting.
   
   
   
7. Selling and using wheat: Your harvest can be transported in your trailer. You have a few shops to sell to. You can also use wheat to feed your animals. Or transport your wheat to a mill and produce some nice flour. This can also be produced into baked goods at a bakery. The choice is up to you!
